Affirm Survey Reveals Consumers Are Planning to Resolve Differently in 2021
SAN FRANCISCO – December 4, 2020 – Seven out of 10 consumers are tossing out their materialistic New Year’s resolutions for 2021, according to new research from Affirm, a more flexible and transparent alternative to credit cards. The study asked 2,000 Americans what they want to resolve for in the new year, and found that more than half of respondents (52%) agree that their usual go-to resolutions, like joining a gym, aren’t applicable to their lifestyles anymore.
Instead, they’re looking to save money for future expenses (62%), better budget their finances (54%), and focus more on experiences (68%), like spending more time with their family (53%) and traveling more (49%). In fact, 65% don’t even plan on looking at these goals as “resolutions” but rather “intentions” for the new year with seven in 10 respondents sharing they don’t plan on setting harsh deadlines to achieve new goals, but rather will check in with themselves throughout 2021.
“It is no surprise that people are focusing their upcoming New Year's resolutions on taking control of their finances in 2021, given all the experiences that they had to put on hold in 2020,” said Silvija Martincevic, Chief Commercial Officer at Affirm. “We expect to see much more intentional spending in 2021 as people attempt to make up for what they missed this year!"
The new report reveals that pay over time is growing in popularity with 54% of those surveyed sharing they are interested in using a pay over time solution in 2021, and 58% agreeing that a pay over time solution allows them to better budget.

Over half of respondents (54%) are planning to better budget in 2021 and 49% are hoping to pay down debt.
43% said they learned to be more intentional about their purchases in 2020 and plan to take that learning with them into 2021.
63% believe their personal finances will be better off in 2021 than they were at the end of 2020.
62% agree that their spending is shifting to new categories in 2021 with 47% noting they’ll spend the most on travel in 2021, compared to just 29% in 2020.
67% agree that the ability to earn rewards or receive discounts will impact where they spend their money in 2021.
58% of respondents also said their 2021 resolution will be having a more positive outlook on life.
